I bought my first Somnium in 2016 and a second one for my guest room a few months later. This is by far the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on.
Michael, Los Angeles, CA
I have had my mattress for three months and can honestly say the benefits are worth every penny and more. I no longer wake up stiff with joint pain. Guess I am not getting old after all, I just needed the right mattress.
Aliceson, Fairfax, VA
I can't even begin to tell you what a great difference this mattress makes. I didn't realize how overdue I was for a better rest until I got it. Thanks so much. I will certainly pass on the word about your product.

CERTIFIED SWEET DREAMS

Hand-made in USA - with German support
Our mattresses, pillows, toppers and washable covers are all hand-made to order in-house in own production facility in Southern California. One exception: Our springs. They are imported from Germany. Why? Much like with cars, beer and bread, Germany is also a leading producer of injection mold products.

Certified & Tested Foam
Independent labs test all of our foams' performance, durability, content and emissions.
Our CertiPUR-US® certified foams are made without ozone depleters, harmful PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde or regulated phthalates and are low VOC.
And yes, we wouldn't have it any other way!

Latex at its Best
Not all latex is created equal! That's why we are using Oeko-Tex 100- certified latex that is safe for the environment and healthy for everyone sleeping on it, while also setting high standards for being quality consistant, durable and even latex allergy-safe. You can enjoy the cloud-like feeling it in our mattresses and toppers.
SLEEP MATH
Sleeping the recommended eight hours a day keeps you in bed for a whopping 29,200 hours over the course of ten years. Imagine using other daily-use items for the same length of time:
Driving at only 20 mph would have you travel 584,000 mile in your car. Watching TV three hours a day leaves you stuck with the same set for 9,733 days or roughly 26.6 years. And those new shoes? You’d have to wear them 2,430 times for each 12 hour day.
Since you don’t do any of that, it’s probably time for a new mattress as well.
FAQ
Our mattresses are hand-made to order in-house in our Southern California production facility and made almost exclusively from US-produced components.
One important exception are our patented innersprings. Those are made for us in Germany. Why? Because much like German cars, beer and bread, injections molded products are also something Germany is world renowned for.
It usually takes seven to ten days to make one of the mattresses from our standard product list. And when they are ready, we never ship them full-size and never compressed.
Excellent question! People often assume that we use the softer springs in our regular mattress and the firmer ones to make firmer beds. That’s actually not the case. All of our mattresses take advantage of both spring types to offer softer comfort for the shoulders and more active support for the lumbar spine. So inside all of our mattress you will find a combination of our firmer dark blue and softer lighter blue springs.
The firmness of our mattresses is determined by the firmness of the foam we use in the 2″ resting layer atop and below our springs, with the firm being the firmest, followed by the regular and then the latex.
If you have tried them all but would like softer or firmer support, please let us know and we will happily customize your mattress at no extra charge.
Did you notice how none of our mattresses are called soft or extra soft? It’s because we believe, active support is essential for a good night’s rest. Both of our original Somnium mattresses — the firm and the regular — are on the supportive side by design. However, a mattress should also be soft enough for you to sink and allow your lumbar spine to make contact with the bed, rather than being unsupported.
Generally speaking, if you are lightweight or switching from a pillow-top bed, our regular mattress is probably the best choice for you; if you are of average weight, very active or have always longed for firm support, we recommend our firm model.
If you like your mattress a bit more plush, without foregoing support, the new Somnium Latex is a good option. Alternatively, you can also “graduate” to more ergonomic support by topping one of our original firmnesses with our plush latex topper and either keeping or later removing it. The latter is also a good option for customers who need a softer sleep environment at times, due to medical conditions like migraines or fibromyalgia or other body aches.
If you don’t have any of our showrooms nearby to try our different options, please contact us and we will help you make the most comfortable choice.
The standard profile height of our mattresses is 8 inches or 20 cm. Since we can customize every aspect, please let us know if you require or desire a different thickness and we can customize it for you.
Everyone – even people without sleep problems – sleeps better on a new, medium firm mattress. That, in a nutshell is what a study at the University of Oklahoma revealed a few years back. And while we offer a ten-year warranty for our mattress, consider the following mattress math:
Sleeping an average of eight hours per night, has you using your mattress 29,200 over the course of ten years, 20,440 over seven years and even 14,600 in five.
Driving a car at only 20 miles per hour for 29,200 hours, would have to travel a distance of 584,000 miles.
Watching TV for three hours a day makes you use the same TV for 9,733 days or roughly 26.6 years to get to the same amount of hours.
And if you wear those new heels for 12 hours at a time, you’d have to wear them 2,430 times to use the 29,200 hours.
None of these items will perform as good as new after such a long run. Why expect it of your mattress? Do yourself the favor and replace it every five to seven years, if you can.
It’s scary but true: Federal standards require that all mattresses sold in the US can withstand the flame of a Bunsen burner for 70 seconds without bursting into flames. How manufactures achieve that task is pretty much up them — and chemical flame retardants remain a popular solution.
Let’s start with a quick look at those chemicals: Countless studies conducted in Europe and the U.S. discovered that PBDE, a flame retardant found in products ranging from mattresses to dashboard and computer housing to toaster has devastating effects on consumers’ health. Exposure to these polybrominated diphenyl ethers can disrupt the thyroid hormone balanced cause harm to the developing brain. Other effects that have been cited include hyperactivity, hearing los and even cancer. And harmful as it is to people, it is also bio-accumulative and toxic to the environment.
Obviously, we wanted none of that anywhere near our mattresses. That’s why we decided to make fire-safety truly safe by starting with inherently flame resistant materials when we designed our mattresses, using rayon in our covers and specialty highly-resilient foam for our cores, instead of flammable cotton and traditional bedding foam. Rayon, for example, chars, which is allowed in the Federal test, while cotton burns.
This approach is as simple as it is savvy: Since these materials offer fire safety on a molecular level – — it will never wear off, rub off, wash off or make you sneeze.
As added protection, we use a light, knitted barrier sock between our foam and the removable covers. It does double duty by also protecting the foam and making it easier to handle once a cover is removed for washing.
Sleeping is actually pretty dirty business: We lose about a pint of moisture every night while we sleep. Two thirds of that evaporate with our breath; the other third stays behind in the sleep environment and, unfortunately, becomes a prime food source for dust mites that, in turn, can cause allergies. .
We found an easy way to keep things pristine: Removable and washable covers that can easily be cleaned in a home washing machine and, ideally, line-dried.
For ease of use our covers zip apart into two halves. Always remove, wash and replace the top half, then flip the mattress and repeat on the other side. It’s much easier than removing and replacing the whole cover at once.
It’s not even a fair fight: Dual-sided mattresses offer twice the amount of sleep surface — one on the top and the bottom — and flipping the mattress to alternate between them increases the longevity and keeps you comfortable longer.
You should flip your Somnium once a quarter and alternate between head-over-foot with side-over-side flips.
Single-sided mattresses only allow you to rotate them on in the same plane around their own axis and always leave you sleeping with the heaviest part of your body — the hips — in the same location.

THE MYTH OF TOSSING AND TURNING
‘Stop tossing and turning’ has been the mantra of the bedding industry for decades. Not so fast! It is perfectly natural for us to move five to ten times every hour even in our sleep – and putting a stop to it hurts more than it helps. Movement allows our body to rejuvenate. It’s the reason you are taller again when you wake up in the morning than you were with a tired, compressed spine the night before. Somnium was designed to support your nightly movement.
2
ELECTROSMOG
Like an invisible bad dream, electromagnetic fields can disrupt your nightly rest. We can help. Our flower-shaped springs made from durable and long-lasting TPEE allow us to build a completely metal-free bed . Since metal coils have long been suspected of amplifying EMFs, creating disruptive electric micro currents and preventing sleepers from reaching the most restorative state, we are glad to be one step ahead with our mattress.
3
ALLERGIC TO DUST
The dirty truth is this: The average person loses one pint of moisture a night – a cumulative eight Jacuzzi tubs-full over the course of 10 years. Dust mites that feed on sweat and old skin find an ample supply in many beds and their droppings can trigger numerous allergies. Somnium puts an end to that dirty circle by bringing hygiene back to bed with foam that is inhospitable to mites and bugs, removable and washable cover and an air-permeable mattress design that promotes air circulation to help moisture evaporate.
MATTRESS CARE
STARTER TIPS
- Somniums already contain all necessary support technology; all you need to add is a flat, even surface. Suitable options include our Box, platforms, fixed or flexible slats (max 2″ gaps) or even your bedroom floor.
- Used box springs, adjustable bases left in uneven positions and overly soft slats are never a good match, as the mattress contours to their shape.
- Our mattresses are dual-sided, so please flip yours once a quarter. For most even wear, alternating head-to-toe and side-over-side rotations is ideal.
- Practice clean sleep! To keep your new bed pristine, you can machine-wash the cover in warm water on the gentle cycle as needed. Line drying is recommended.
- Zipping the cover into two pieces makes washing a breeze. Once dry, zip the top back in place, flip the mattress and remove the other half. Rise and repeat.
- When moving an unboxed mattress, please make sure not to fold or bend it; when storing it, please store it horizontally.
- Take your time: Please allow your body 2-3 weeks to adjust when you switch from a different mattress style or firmness grade.
My husband who has major back issues and I were looking for a mattress that would make his back feel better but not be too hot for me. We found the perfect solution in Somnium. We love our mattress and have recently also replaced another very expensive one we had just bought for our vacation home with a second one.
Marilyn, Santa Barbara, CA
We both love it. So much better than the Tempur-pedic that it replaced!
Paul, Santa Monica, CA
Day One on the bed was a bit questionable since it is so much firmer than what we were used to, but now we LOVE it. Your body completely adjusts and it starts feeling softer. Plus, my husband who used to wake up with back pain every morning is now pain free. It’s actually crazy. I love it!
